What is Apple Cider Vinegar and why should I take it?

Apple cider Vinegar

What is apple cider vinegar?

Well, it is mostly apple juice, by if you add yeast, this turns the sugar in the juice to alcohol.  This process is called fermentation. The bacteria turn the alcohol into acetic acid, (this is what gives it its sour taste and why it has a strong smell). Make sure you look out for organic as this contains more vitamins & minerals.

Why are there floaty bits in my apple cider vinegar?

Those bits are called “The Mother” and although it’s not very pleasant looking, it’s an important part of your apple cider vinegar.  According to Dr Josh Axe, doctor of Natural Medicine and founder of DrAxe.com “The Mother” in apple cider vinegar is a culture of beneficial bacteria involved in the creation and fermentation of vinegar.  “The Mother” is usually found in unrefined and unfiltered versions of apple cider vinegar.  So, look for the cloudy apple cider vinegar with “The Mother”.

Does Apple cider Vinegar contain any nutrients?

Apple cider vinegar is naturally high in

  • Magnesium
  • Vitamins B’s

How much should I take?

It only takes 1-2 Tablespoons to take advantage of its benefits.  You can take it in some warm water with a teaspoon of raw organic honey just prior to meals.

You can also cook with apple cider vinegar.  You can use it in salad dressing and your favourite marinade.  So many possibilities, click here to find more recipes.

Are there any side effects?

Some dentists advise that consuming apple cider vinegar can damage tooth enamel.  Higher concentrations of apple cider vinegar or long-term consumption is likely to increase the risk.  To help reduce this risk, you should not consume straight, always dilute with plenty of water and it may be helpful to rinse your mouth out with plain water or mouthwash.

Did you get all that?

Although the merits of this sour liquid may be controversial, one thing is for sure: If there are any benefits to be had from drinking apple cider vinegar, it is most potent as raw and organic. So if you’re going to drink vinegar, you might as well do it as a mother-lover.

Our favourite apple cider vinegar is Gaga’s. It’s Australian made, it’s even made in Melbourne! It’s organic and on special this month!
